The Upper Room Daily Devotional – January 7th 2021
Theme: I will praise the Lord, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me. – Psalm 16:7 (NIV)
In the past, sleep sometimes eluded me. Though I would try to relax, I would “replay” conversations from the day and consider how I might have responded differently. Sometimes I would fret about a difficult situation at work or the health of a loved one.
As my faith grew, I realized such brooding was counterproductive — God was calling me to focus on positive things (see Phil. 4:8). I started what I now call my blessing book. At the beginning of each year I purchase a weekly planner with several lines for each day. Before going to bed I spend a few minutes reflecting on the day — its accomplishments, challenges, and blessings — and list things for which I am thankful. These blessings can be as ordinary as a call from a friend or as remarkable as recovering from surgery. When I’m concerned about something, I make a notation to remind me that God is in control and prayerfully turn the situation over to the Lord. As I write, I give thanks for the many ways I encounter God’s love.
Lately it has become common for me to start my list of blessings with “a good night’s sleep.” My nighttime anxiety has been exchanged for the peace only God can give.
