Theme: Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did. – 1 John 2:6 (NIV)
While hiking a mountain trail on my way to explore an abandoned gold mine, I thought of the elderly man who had shown me the trailhead and described his hike up this same path 30 years ago. I also thought of the miners who must have made this trek countless times when the mine was operational over 100 years ago. They would have seen the same clear stream rushing along the trail, the same towering peaks, and even some of the same trees. They would have experienced the same challenges and undoubtedly many more.
Such is our spiritual journey. Others have gone before us, and the path is there for us to follow. We have the ultimate guide in Jesus Christ, and we can follow in his footsteps to avoid becoming lost. If we accept Jesus as our guide, it is important for us also to accept the responsibility of helping others we may meet along the way, whether their needs are physical, emotional, or spiritual. Jesus would not have left them behind, and so we are called to help those around us as well.
TODAY’S PRAYER – The Upper Room Daily Devotional – January 8th 2021
Gracious God, thank you for those who came before us to guide us on the path to salvation. Thank you most of all for the example given us by Christ Jesus as we attempt to follow in his footsteps. Amen.
